“Soaring to New Heights”, Northside Center of the Arts (NCA) is a multi-faceted Fine Arts Program in Partnership with NCA Martial Arts.  The program satisfies the demands and develops the Recreational student. We offer classes in Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, West-African, Modeling/Etiquette. Within the studio a strong emphasis is placed on cultivating the talent of Jacksonville’s youth and creating an artistic outlet for quality studio training, theory and performance. This year we are celebrating our seventh year of excellence. Within the studio a strong emphasis is placed on the individual. Each student must realize their own goals and train to artistic excellence with the guidance of seven experienced professionals. The accomplishments of our students tell the story of our studio. The NCA students and instructors perform monthly at the Ritz Theatre and LaVilla Museum as the “Official Ritz Hip-Hop Crew” we also participate in all local parades, yearly at the Mayors Holiday Christmas Party at  City Hall our annual recital at the Florida Theater and at numerous performances throughout the city. The NCA Pageant Program holds many crowns, this years includes Miss. Forrest, Miss. Ed White and Miss. Delta Teen.

Registration/Payments Registration fee is due at time of registration and a decreased yearly registration fee is due for participation. Payments are due the first class of every month. All payments are due the first week of every month. A late fee will be added weekly for all payment not made by the 7th of the month. Any payment not received  by the third week of the month will remove the student from class.

Ballet Classes
Ages 3-4 & 5-6
60 minutes per week - Students will participate in a combined Ballet and Tap class. The ballet class introduces students to movement as they learn basic movements with tambourines and other props. This helps set the foundation and the love for dance at an early age. Tap class teaches tap steps while using simple combinations with single and double sound movements to help promote coordination.


Ages 7-11
60 to 60 minutes per week - Emphasizes ballet vocabulary and develops a working knowledge of positions, turns and alignment. Attention is placed on musicality, physical composition, intent and projection of movements. All students at this age are encouraged to audition for local magnet schools and should begin to explore more than one art area.

Ages 12-15 & 16-19
60 minutes per week - Program 3 & 4 is temporarily combined. Students learn to transform the scope of technical proficiency to convey and embody their desires, expression and technical style. Vocabulary, simple variations, alignment, multiple turns and lifts are emphasized. Students with one to two years of training are encouraged to audition for local magnet schools.

Ages 20 & up
60 minutes per week - this class is structured to teach and explore a deeper awareness of the body. Vocabulary, technique, musicality, toning and maintaining strength is emphasized. The technical aspects of this class provides the student with a personal sense of accomplishment as they develop in the art of dance.

Hip-Hop Classes
60 minutes per week, (kids and adult classes are available) - This athletic and challenging program is for the student who likes to dance and is open to new styles and techniques. Hip-Hop has many different elements that are usually seen on the Ritz stage and on music videos. Choreography is tasteful and students are encouraged to audition for the Hip-Hop Crew.


The Official Ritz Hip-Hop Crew
These advanced dancers are contracted by the Ritz Theatre and LaVilla Museum to perform monthly for Amateur Night as the opening number and intermission entertainment. Kids only perform when there is a scheduled kids show. Auditions are held at the Ritz twice a year.

Modern/Jazz Dance Classes
Ages 3-6
Not offered.

Ages 7-11
60 minutes per week - This class combines balance, flexibility and the development of fluid movement within the scope of modern dance. Combined with the recreational Jazz class, this class is an upbeat, precision movement class that improves musicality, flexibility and coordination. Ballet class is encouraged to properly set the foundation of dance.

Ages 12-15 & 16-19
60 minutes per week - Athletic movements are developed as they relate to dramatic and dynamic qualities. Various styles incorporating Horton and Graham principles are taught. The combination of Jazz styles build technique, vocabulary personal style, extensions, flexibility, multiple turns. Ballet class is encouraged as a strong foundation for dance.

Ages 20 & up
60 minutes per week - This is a rigorous class to build stamina, ability, awareness and technique. This class focuses on the individual and enhances coordination and skill.

Tap
Ages 3-6
See Ballet ages 3-6.

Ages 7-11
60 minutes per week - Teaches all the fundamental tap steps. Vocabulary, coordination and rhythm are all combined for performance ability. A commitment to the class will help develop a personal style. Ballet & Modern/Jazz class is recommended as foundation to dance.

Ages 12-15 & 16-19
60 minutes per week - This class reviews Tap styles and more advanced techniques. Creativeness, coordination, clear sound, timing and jazz movements are developed. Ballet & Modern/Jazz class is recommended as foundation to dance.

Ages 20 & up
60 minutes per week - Adult Tap incorporates fundamental stepping along with technical proficiency. This recreational class focuses on style, performance ability and personal development.

West African Dance Class
Kids and combined program
90 minutes per week - A class of authentic, upbeat and melodic African cultural dance. This is a very exciting class and will help to develop a love for the stylized movement.

Modeling/Etiquette
All Ages
60 minutes per week - This class is designed to help build self-esteem, improve poise and proper attitude. International runway techniques, commercial, high fashion print poses, on-camera experience, how to audition, effective resume’s, table and telephone etiquette are a part of the curriculum. Graduates receive a photo session with a professional fashion photographer for picture selection that can be used in a portfolio. Upon completion all students are referred to the appropriate agencies if recommended.

Latin Dance
All Ages
Latin dance class is a high energy social dance class.
The class is one hour. Students will learn Salsa, Cha-Cha, Bachata, and Merengue. No dance partner is necessary.

Ballet
Female: Black spaghetti strap leotard for summer, long sleeve for winter.
 - Ballet pink tights
- Pink full sole Bloch Ballet slipper with elastic for ages 3 to 11
- 12 & up, split sole.

Male: White fitted shirt or black leotard
- Black seamless dance tights or black sweat pants
 - Black socks and black ballet shoes.


Tap

Modern/Jazz
Same leotard as Ballet

- Sandal sole for Modern (Recital)
- Tan jazz boot for all ages.


Hip-Hop
Creative loose fitting street or athletic clothing. Bloch dance sneaker or black sneaker.

West African Dance
Female & Male
- Multi-print lapa, black leotard, biker shorts, no shoes.


Modeling/Acting/Pageantry
Female - Dress or skirt, hard bottom church shoes.
Male - Pants or slacks with a button down shirt, hard bottom church shoes.


Latin Dance
Ladies and Men - Dress comfortably, no rubber soled shoes, check with instructor.
